From Zero to Hero

Jaide J., at the time a Grade 2 learner, started at Edublox at the end of February 2010. First attending two lessons per week, and later only one lesson per week, Jaide went from being a child who was unable to read and spell, and scored mainly 1’s and 2’s on his school report, to one whose reading and spelling are on par and who now scores 3’s and 4’s on his school report.

INITIAL ASSESSMENT, 19 FEBRUARY 2010

Jaide was tested on the Essi Reading Test, on a Grade 2, 1st term level. He could read only two of the twenty words, after sounding them out, and thus scored a stanine of 1 (9 = very good, 1 = very poor and the bottom 4% of all testees).

On an informal paragraph reading test, Jaide could read only 17 words per minute, but this was done with help. Many of the 17 words he attempted to read on his own were read incorrectly.

He was tested on the Essi Spelling Test, on a Grade 2, 1st term level. He could spell only one of twenty words and scored a stanine of 2. He made reversals, writing “brume” for “drum” and “boor” for “door”.

Our assessment determined that Jaide was struggling with reading and spelling as a result of weak cognitive skills. He had a severe directionality problem and scored
39% on the Auditory Memory Assessment
56% on the Visual Memory Assessment
34% on the Form Perception Assessment
50% on the Eye Span Assessment
0% on the Logical Thinking Assessment

SCALE:
90%-100% — Very good/Development will further increase the skill level.
80%-89% — Good/Development will further increase the skill level.
70%-79% — Average/Development is necessary.
0%-69% — Below average/Development is essential.

RE-ASSESSMENT, 2 NOVEMBER 2011

Jaide was again tested on the Essi Reading Test, this time on a Grade 3, 4th term level. He scored a stanine of 5, which is average, and means that Jaide’s reading is now on par.

On the informal paragraph reading test Jaide could read 92 words per minute, making no errors.

He was tested on the Essi Spelling Test, on a Grade 3, 4th term level. He scored a stanine of 5, which is average, and means that Jaide’s spelling is now on par.

He scored
100% on the Auditory Memory Assessment
100% on the Visual Memory Assessment
85% on the Form Perception Assessment
70% on the Eye Span Assessment
33% on the Logical Thinking Assessment
